Many of you have asked us this question. Here is the answer.

One of the guiding principles of the new Hypercar / GTP regulations is to give private teams a chance to shine in the top class, as was done in Group C in the 1980s. And therefore to get a car similar to the one used by the factory teams.

➡️ Eight 'private' Porsche 963s in 2024?

This morning we reported on Porsche's desire to see up to eight 963s entered by private teams in 2024, four in WEC and as many in IMSA. This is one of the best ways to get a return on investment. And what a boon for Multimatic, which is in charge of designing the chassis of the German prototype.

That's all well and good, but not all private teams are in a position to buy an LMDh (or LMH), far from it... Without the support of Hertz, who became its title partner, the Jota team might not have embarked on the adventure.

To the question: how much does an LMDh cost? Porsche answered. Or rather the price of a 963. What about the competition? First of all, we would need to know of they want to sell cars or not.

According to the German manufacturer, a 963 costs around 2.5 million euros, plus operating costs of around eight to ten million euros a season. These investments need to pay off, and the only currency is success.

On the other hand, “these teams fight it out for overall wins just like the factory cars,” explains director of LMDh Factory Motorsport Urs Kuratle. “That’s their objective. That’s what they owe their sponsors – and we want to make that possible for them.”

That's a very sporting thing to say... although Porsche didn't appreciate the humiliation inflicted on the official 962s by the #7 Joest Racing 956 in the 1985 Le Mans 24 Hours.
