Cameron and Griffin kick-start Barwell's biggest British GT campaign
Barwell Motorsport will launch its biggest full-season British GT Championship effort in almost two decades this season, with Duncan Cameron and Matt Griffin confirmed as the first drivers for what will be a three-car Lamborghini attack.
Cameron and Griffin will make the switch to Barwell for 2026, swapping their regular Ferrari for one of the Surrey squad’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2s. They are the first confirmed pairing for what will be a three-car entry from the Surrey squad – the team’s biggest full-season British GT effort since it operated a trio of Aston Martin DBRS9s back in 2007.
Multiple race-winners Cameron and Griffin are one of the most experienced driver partnerships in British GT, having enjoyed their maiden season together back in 2009. While every previous appearance has come at the wheel of a Ferrari, they will now team-up aboard Barwell’s new #55 Lamborghini Huracan, supported by Hensmill, Lady Luck Irish Whiskey and ESS Electrical Switchgear Services.
Cameron has raced regularly both in the UK and abroad over the last 18 years with campaigns in British GT, the FIA World Endurance Championship, European Le Mans Series, International GT Open and Blancpain Endurance Series, together with making five appearances at the Le Mans 24 Hours. His and Griffin’s partnership began back in 2009 and thus far they have achieved six outright race wins in the championship.
For Griffin the chance to join the Barwell fold reignites a relationship that began back in 2006 when he was in negotiations to drive the team’s first Aston Martin DBRS9s. Since then he has been a serial winner in championships around the world and has racked up 11 starts at the Le Mans 24 Hours. He is also sixth in British GT’s all-time winners list. The Irish ace will now contest his first domestic campaign in a Lamborghini.
This year will mark the current Huracan’s final season of top-flight GT3 competition, with the switch from the naturally aspirated V10 machine to the new twin-turbo V8 Temerario GT3 due to be made for the start of the 2027 season. Therefore, going all-in with a three-car British GT entry represents a fitting farewell for the Huracan, which Barwell has pioneered in the UK competition since the car first arrived in British GT in 2016.
Since then, Barwell Motorsport has been responsible for 28 of the Bolognese brand’s 31 British GT race wins, claiming at least one victory in every season since the partnership with Lamborghini Squadra Corse began. The team has also amassed a record seven GT3 Teams’ titles (five with Lamborghini) and four GT3 Drivers’ crowns (three with the Huracan GT3).
With huge experience behind them, Barwell’s top-class engineering environment and a comprehensive pre-season testing programme planned, Cameron and Griffin hope to hit the ground running and fight at the sharp end of the grid this season.
Duncan Cameron says: “I was very keen to get back to British GT for this year as my son, Henry, will be competing in Ginetta Junior on the same package. Eventually we’d love to race together in GTs, so it makes sense for us both to be competing on the same weekends. When we looked at options for this year it made sense to switch, and when the chance to join Barwell Motorsport came up, it was a no-brainer. I’ve yet to experience the Lamborghini Huracan but across the years it’s been a very competitive package at pretty much every track. I know with the support of Matt and the Barwell team I’ll learn quickly and I’m looking forward to a really competitive year ahead.”
Matt Griffin says: “We felt the time was right to make a change for this season in British GT, and when you go looking for a top team you don’t have to search much further than Barwell Motorsport. You only have to look at their record in British GT to know they’re one of, if not the most successful team in the championship’s history, so it should be the perfect environment for Duncan and I. While we’ll still be competing in Europe with Ferrari, I’m hugely excited to get to grips with the Lamborghini. Both cars are mid-engined, so the dynamics shouldn’t be too different, and I’m looking forward to racing with a naturally aspirated engine again, which I’ve always felt was a strength for me. You don’t have to worry about keeping turbos spooling or dropping out of torque bands… it’s a pure driving experience with that wonderful V10. We’ve got several tests booked pre-season to help us adapt, and being part of a three-car team with open data sharing should also be a great help. I can’t wait to get going, and I’d also like to say thanks to AF Corse for allowing me to be a part of this programme in British GT.”
Barwell Motorsport team principal Mark Lemmer adds: “This is going to be a big season for us, on many levels, and confirming a partnership as strong and experienced as Duncan and Matt is a great way to start. As driver pairings go it’s hard to find a more enduring partnership than theirs. They have competed at the very highest levels together for many years and know each other’s skills inside out. They work incredibly well together, so I have no doubt they’ll adapt very quickly to the Lamborghini and we’re looking forward to seeing what they can achieve this year.
"With this being the final year running the Huracan in top-flight competition – a car we’ve had unprecedented success with – the time is right to expand the effort to three cars. Alongside this enhanced British GT commitment we’ve also launched our GT3 Heritage division to race in classic GT3 series across Europe, so it’s going to be a big season at home and abroad. We can’t wait to get started.”
Barwell Motorsport’s other two crews, plus its GT3 Heritage line-up, will be announced in due course.
