Two-time IndyCar Series champion Will Power makes his Intercontinental GT Challenge and GT3 debut at the Indianapolis 8 Hour presented by AWS next weekend (October 16-18) when he joins fellow Australians Kenny Habul and Chaz Mostert in the 75 Express Mercedes-AMG.
Power, who won the Indy 500 in 2018, has vast experience of the Brickyard road course that is also hosting GT World Challenge America powered by AWS’s season finale. He won there five times for Penske and has finished on the podium in each of the last two years.
Now he makes a belated GT3 debut for 75 Express – the same team, albeit under a different name – with whom he was due to contest 2023’s Rolex 24 at Daytona before personal circumstances forced him to step away.
Mostert, meanwhile, is best known for his Supercars exploits Down Under where he lies fifth ahead of the championship’s showpiece Bathurst 1000 this weekend. But he also possesses vast GT3 experience that includes a class victory with 75 Express’ forerunner, SunEnergy1, at the 2023 CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa.
A practice accident prevented Habul from joining him in the same car that year. But they and Power will finally have a chance to compete together aboard an entry that has moved from Pro-Am to Pro in light of Power and Mostert’s gradings.
However, the team’s primary goal is to secure IGTC’s Independent Cup title for Habul who starts six points behind joint championship leaders Antares Au and Ralf Bohn.
Power – who joins Andretti Global in IndyCar next season – is not the first series champion or Indy 500 winner to subsequently compete at the 8 Hour. Alex Palou was part of Lone Star’s Pro class Mercedes-AMG effort last year.
