Alex Peroni and Mark Rosser have taken victory in Race 2 of GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS at Queensland Raceway.
Starting from the front row alongside the Kelso Electrical/Team MPC Audi R8 LMS EVO II of Broc Feeney and Brad Schumacher, Peroni capitalised on a poor start from Feeney to charge into the lead off the line and stayed there for the rest of the race.
Behind the wheel of the Team BRM Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II, Peroni and Rosser ended up holding on to victory over Team MPC’s Brendon Leitch and Tim Miles by just three tenths of a second.
Once again taking victory in the Am Cup was Renee Gracie in her OnlyFans Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II, and Paul Stokell and Gary Higgon held on to take trophy class honours in their KFC Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO I.
In what was a highly interrupted race, the first of three BMW Safety Car periods was brought out just 10 minutes into the outing, as the #111 Motorsport’s Darren Currie spun at Turn 1 and found the gravel.
Shortly after, Luke Youlden brought his Porsche 911 GT3 R (991) into the pit lane for an unscheduled pit stop, which turned into a retirement from the race, leaving Paul Stokell in the trophy class lead following a spirited battle.
For the second day in a row, pit stop trouble took the Volante Rosso Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 of Declan Fraser and Liam Talbot out of contention after electrical issues prevented the car from restarting after their pit stop, putting them a lap down.
Things would go from bad to worse for Talbot later in the race when he spun exiting Turn 4 and again struggled to get the car started, bringing out the final BMW Safety Car of the race.
Upon taking over the Team BRM Audi, Mark Rosser went on to build a nearly 12-second lead over Tim Miles in the Team MPC Audi, until the second BMW Safety Car was called for Gary Higgon spinning his KFC/Team MPC Audi at Turn 1.
Rosser was able to hold on with superior car speed through one more yellow flag period as Miles was hunted down by Schumacher.
The Team MPC Audi of Feeney and Schumacher was not as comfortable on cold tyres and directly after restarts, but once they entered a long green flag period, both drivers could extract the same pace seen in Race 1.
Renee Gracie did not put a foot wrong in her race, never being troubled for the class lead throughout the race.
Theo Koundouris and James Koundouris in the Geyer Valmont Racing/Tigani Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO held their own in second place in class, while Darren Currie and Grant Donaldson reverted to treating the race as a test event after Currie’s spin early on, gaining valuable experience for the remainder of their season.
Following Luke Youlden and Nathan Halstead’s retirement, all Paul Stokell and Gary Higgon had to do was just bring the car home and finish the race to take out the trophy class race win, and despite a spin for Higgon, they managed to do exactly that, sweeping the weekend in the process.
The GT World Challenge Australia powered by AWS heads to Sandown Raceway for GT Festival Sandown at Round 4 from July 25–27.
