Ferrari driver Jack Aitken claimed pole position in the second qualifying session at the Dekra Lausitzring. The Brit completed a lap of the 3.478-kilometre track in 1:19.837 minutes on Sunday morning, making him 0.067 seconds faster than second-placed Marco Wittmann in the BMW M4 GT3 Evo. This afternoon will see Aitken start a DTM race from P1 for the fifth time.

“It was nearly a perfect lap! We made a few minor changes to the car overnight; it was incredible to drive. On top of that, I managed to get the tyres to the ideal temperature range at the right time,” explained Aitken, who was happy with the three points for pole position.

Two-time DTM Champion Wittmann confirmed his good form this weekend and finished behind Aitken in second place. Porsche factory driver Thomas Preining ended the 20-minute qualifying session in third place. Next to him in the second row of the grid is Saturday’s winner and championship leader Lucas Auer, who came fourth in the Mercedes-AMG GT3. Ben Dörr delivered another strong performance and steered his McLaren 720S GT3 Evo into fifth place.

The second qualifying session at the Lausitzring wasn’t decided until shortly before the end in temperatures of 14 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning. Auer was the first driver to get a time under the 1:20.000-minute mark, and just a few moments later it was Wittmann who took the lead. Three and a half minutes before the end of qualifying, Aitken set the best time. Preining managed to move himself up into third place. With a strong lap at the last minute, Dörr made it into the top five. All 24 drivers were within a second of each other.
