Mercedes-AMG continues to set the pace at the opening round of the DTM in Oschersleben. The second qualifying session on Sunday morning saw Jules Gounon from Mercedes-AMG Team Mann-Filter set the fastest lap time of 1:21.072 minutes to ensure he starts from pole position for the first time in his DTM career. Fellow Mercedes-AMG driver Lucas Auer had previously been the fastest driver in both qualifying and race one on Saturday.

"My first DTM pole - that is a very special moment for me. I was lacking the necessary speed in Saturday's race, so the team worked into the night on the car. That awesome effort really paid dividends. We have to make two mandatory pit stops in the race for the first time. We will do our best," promised Gounon.

Jordan Pepper was second fastest, proving once again that the circuit in the Magdeburg Börde region suits him and his Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2.

Thierry Vermeulen from the Emil Frey Racing team was third in a Ferrari 296 GT3. Lining up alongside him on the second row for Sunday's race will be Ayhancan Güven, who ended the session in fourth place. Ricardo Feller from Land Motorsport guided the only Audi in the field to fifth.

Despite the sun shining, temperatures at the start of qualifying on Sunday morning were a relatively cool ten degrees Celsius. As such, it took more than ten minutes before the top lap times started to come as the drivers got sufficient heat into the Pirelli slicks. Gounon was always among the front-runners in the race against the clock. The Frenchman was the first to crack the 1:22.000-minute mark and set the fastest time on his fifth lap.

While Pepper secured second place shortly thereafter, Vermeulen had to wait until a minute and a half before the end of the session to snatch third place. The spectators in Oschersleben again witnessed just how evenly matched the field is, with the top 20 drivers all within one second of each other.
