WEC - Gelael completes ultra-competitive United Autosports #95 Mclaren line-up
“I am super excited to be in a car with United Autosports after being long-term rivals,” says Gelael. “I think it will be a really good experience and a strong opportunity to win the championship after finishing second twice … fifth time is the charm! I’m looking forward to racing with Marino for the first time and, of course, to work with Darren again after some great highlights together in 2024. It’s great to be a part of the McLaren family. Let’s build something long lasting and something great.”
FIA Silver-graded driver Gelael - who, aged 10, started his racing career as a rally navigator for his father - rose through the ranks in FIA Formula 3 Europe and FIA Formula 2, before making his sportscar debut in the 2015-16 Asian Le Mans Series, where he posted two wins out of two races. Alongside his burgeoning career in endurance racing, the Indonesian driver appeared at a number of Formula One test days for Toro Rosso between 2017 and 2019.
2025 will mark Gelael’s fifth full season in the FIA World Endurance Championship and his second in the LMGT3 category. To date, he has celebrated four race wins, a further 10 podium finishes - including two second-place finishes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans - and has taken the WEC vice-championship title twice.
“It’s fantastic to have Sean on board for the 2025 season,” says United Autosports CEO Richard Dean. “After years of competing against each other in LMP2 and LMGT3, we now have his speed, skill and determination on our side. Together with Darren [Leung] and Marino [Sato], we have an incredibly competitive driver line-up in the #95 McLaren … it’s a very real WEC championship contender.”
Collectively, Gelael and co-drivers Leung and Sato have secured three podiums, including one race win, four top-fives and 10 top-10 race finishes in just one season of WEC LMGT3 racing – and, together, the trio are ready to build on strong foundations.
“I am really excited to race with Marino and to continue my WEC efforts with Sean,” says co-driver Darren Leung. “We created some incredible memories together in 2024 and hope for even more in 2025!”
