New team, new manufacturer: Engstler all set for his second DTM season
Italian bull on the charge. Luca Engstler will go in pursuit of points for the Lamborghini Liqui Moly team in the coming DTM season. The Wiggensbach-born driver joins Lamborghini works driver Christian Engelhart (Starnberg) as part of the Grasser Racing Team, for whom he will drive a Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2. The opening round, at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben from 26th to 28th April, marks the start of the 23-year-old’s second season in the DTM.
“I am mega happy to be involved in the DTM again this year, especially with a team like GRT. We have a top package and I can focus fully on exploiting that potential on the track during the coming season,” says Engstler, who moves to Lamborghini from rivals Audi. Now a Lamborghini Young Driver, the man from the Allgäu region of Germany is a member of the sports car manufacturer from Sant’Agata Bolognese’s squad of young drivers. Engstler has previously come through a variety of junior series run by the ADAC: the youngster’s route to the DTM has seen him start in ADAC Formula 4, ADAC TCR Germany, in which he won the title in 2021, and the ADAC GT Masters. On the GT3 scene, the colours of his partner Liqui Moly have become a hallmark of his cars’ liveries in recent years.
Gottfried Grasser, team principal of Grasser Racing Team, is delighted with his new line-up: “Luca is one of the most promising talents in GT3 racing. Christian and he will push each other as much as possible and benefit from each other.” The DTM lines up at eight race weekends in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria. The event at the Red Bull Ring (27th to 29th September) is a home outing for the team from Knittelfeld in Italy. Just ten minutes separate the racetrack in Styria and the headquarters of the Lamborghini outfit, which is set to contest its third DTM season this year.
