After three consecutive victories at Sebring, Portimão and Spa-Francorchamps, Toyota suffered its first setback of the season at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Barely a month after the centenary edition of the French race delivered its verdict, the competitors in the World Endurance Championship meet again at the Autodromo nazionale di Monza, home of the fifth round of the season.

After hosting the Prologue in 2017, the Italian track has joined the WEC calendar in 2021. But make the most of it, because from next year, the LMEM caravan will be setting down its bags 175km to the south-east, at Imola.

It's a pity, because Monza - a 5.793 km long circuit - is a land of endurance racing. The track was the venue for the 1000km of Monza, which was part of the World Sportscar Championship from 1963 to 1977 (with five wins for Ferrari and as many for Porsche), then from 1981 to 1988 and finally from 1990 to 1992.

After being a highlight of the BPR in 1995 and 1996, it was included on the menu of the International Sports Racing Series from 1999 to 2001, the World Sports Car Championship in 2003 and then the Le Mans Series / European Le Mans Series in 2007-2008 and since 2017.

Entry list

Thirty-six cars are expected on the grid: 13 in Hypercar, 11 in LMP2 and 12 in GTE Am.

Hypercar - There will be an all-French trio at the wheel of the #708 Glickenhaus 007, with Nathanaël Berthon joining Romain Dumas and Olivier Pla. João Paulo de Oliveira will be contesting his first WEC race in the N°4 Vanwall Vandervell 680 alongside Tristan Vautier and Esteban Guerrieri. The Brazilian replaces Frenchman Tom Dillmann, who has left the Austrian team. Finally, we'll be keeping a close eye on the first race appearance of the #99 Proton Competition Porsche. The second privateer 963 to join the grid after Jota's, it will be driven by Gianmaria Bruni, Neel Jani and Harry Tincknell.

LMP2 - Tom Blomqvist and Filipe Albuquerque have been held back at Mosport for the sixth round of the IMSA, and will be replaced by Ben Hanley (N°22 Oreca / United Autosports) and Giedo van der Garde (N°23 Oreca / United Autosports) respectively. Juan Manuel Correa at Silverstone for F2, he is replaced by Andrea Caldarelli in the n°9 Prema Racing Oreca 07. In his sister car - the n°63 - Mathias Beche replaces Mirko Bortolotti who will be at the Norisring for the DTM.

GTE Am - The #98 Aston Martin Vantage AMR is absent due to a clash of dates with IMSA. Julien Piguet is expected in the n°21 Ferrari 488 GTE / AF Corse alongside Simon Mann and Ulysse de Pauw. As a reminder, the Frenchman wasn't even able to take the wheel at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, his car being forced to retire in the second hour of the race following contact. Daniel Serra - in Brazil for the Stock Car Pro Series - is replaced by Kei Cozzolino in the #57 Kessel Racing Ferrari. Also busy in IMSA, Gunnar Jeannette and PJ Hyett give up their seats in the #56 Project 1 - AO Porsche 911 RSR-19 to Portuguese driver Guilherme Moura de Oliveira and Dominican driver Efrin Castro.

Good to know: If the N°33 C8.R finishes first or second, Corvette Racing and the trio of Ben Keating / Nico Varrone / Nick Catsburg will already be assured of the Teams and Drivers crowns in GTE Am class. And with good reason: they have a 74-point lead over the competition.
