Alongside Sébastien Buemi and Ryo Hirakawa and within a Toyota Gazoo Racing team that is as conquering as ever, the Kiwi has won his third world title. Here's a look back at a season where, despite appearances, nothing was a foregone conclusion.

Before the final race, your team and the Alpine team had the same number of points. Did this surprise you?

On paper, with the BoP (Balance of Performance. Editor's note) and an Alpine (ex-Rebellion LMP1. Editor's note) with a much higher performance base, it's not surprising that they fought with us. Especially as their car was very reliable because they have been running for several years now (2017. ed.). We knew that they would be fierce opponents and that proved to be the case.
