The arrival of the GTP (LMDh in WEC) Hypercar prototypes in IMSA will shake up the hierarchy on the track. In order to have a stratification between the categories, the LMP2 prototypes will be slowed down in the American championship.

The tests currently organized by IMSA allow the legislator to study the laptimes with the presence on track of three LMP2s (TDS Racing, Tower Motorsport, PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports) in addition to the GTP prototypes and the new GT3s.

The LMP2s will be running two to three seconds slower than last season, so as not to tickle the GTPs too much. If we take the qualifying at the Roar Before the Rolex 24 last January, the LMP2 pole was 1:37.296. In the current test, it's around 1:39. The DPi pole was 1:34.034, compared to around 1:36.644 in GTP.

So far, the slowdown in LMP2s is only in the IMSA championship. Nothing says that it will be the same in WEC knowing that the tyres are different (Michelin in IMSA, Goodyear in WEC).
