Jimmie Johnson targets Le Mans 2023 as part of Garage 56
Watkins Glen sees the return of Jimmie Johnson to IMSA in the Cadillac DPi-V.R entered by Ally Cadillac, the team managed by Action Express Racing. The former NASCAR champion is reunited with Mike Rockenfeller and Kamui Kobayashi for the third Michelin Endurance Cup event in the six-hour format. In 2023, Jimmie Johnson is clearly aiming for a Le Mans 24 Hours race in the Garage 56, as he said yesterday before the IMSA meeting at Watkins Glen : "I'm still looking forward to the IndyCar calendar. I'm still talking to Jay Fry (the president of IndyCar) and others behind the scenes to try to figure out what the calendar might be. I want to go to Le Mans. It would be an incredible experience to go with Hendrick and Action Express Racing. I think a lot depends on the calendar coming out to understand if I can and, from a team perspective, which drivers would be at the top of the list. I'll admit I've had some conversations and I know they're interested. I certainly have a ton of interest in doing it. We're just waiting for the first domino to fall." The NASCAR champion is now waiting to hear more but is confident. "I feel the interest is really high on both sides," he explains. "We haven't been able to talk more formally because the schedule hasn't come out." Jimmie Johnson is looking forward to a return to the IndyCar championship in 2023, with a view to a return to the IMSA championship for a few more races :
“I really think it’s schedule permitting and then the opportunity permitting. There’s such a shakeup next year within sports car racing. I’m not sure the dust is really settled yet to understand where opportunities might lie. I think in the next month or two there will be more clarity for myself and for a few others out there as well just as the series really comes together and cars and seats and opportunities are out there.”
