GPX Historic at Goodwood: the McLaren’s return!
Five months after the Members’ Meeting, GPX Historic is preparing to return to West Sussex on 16 - 17 September to take part in the Goodwood Revival. The team’s 1965 McLaren M1B-Chevrolet entrusted to the expert hands of Stuart Hall will add excitement to the thunder of the Whitsun Trophy field!
Pierre-Brice Mena has confirmed that GPX Historic is really taking a fancy to Goodwood! “We’re delighted to be coming back with this wonderful McLaren that should be pretty competitive. Goodwood is a stand-alone event and it played a major role in inspiring us to create Gulf Historic so taking part in it is something really special. This weekend, we’re aiming to fight at the front and clinch our first podium on this super track!”
In the family of great sports cars the McLaren M1A and M1B series powered by big V8 Chevrolet engines are among the wildest racing cars ever built! There were very few restrictions in the FIA Group 7 regulations and there was no cubic capacity limit. The first creation of the brand founded by Bruce McLaren appeared in the mid-sixties and called on the legend of the American sprint races in the United States Road Racing Championship, which became the famous CanAm Series in 1966.
GPX Historic driver Stuart Hall shares with us the sensations he’s expecting to live at Goodwood at the wheel of the M1B: “There are some crazy fast cars from the 60s in the Whitsun Trophy field, Lola T70s, Ford GT40s, McLaren M1s etc. These cars are really cool to drive and very powerful! You have to be careful with the shifting, not to miss a gear and over rev the engine. The cars react to a smooth driving style.”
Stuart is brimming with praise for the atmosphere at the Goodwood Revival: “The Revival is like no other race. It’s like going back in time. Everyone dresses up in period clothing and there is fantastic spirit. There are some amazing drivers on the entry lists so all the races are really competitive. I’ve been fortunate to take part in the Revival a number of times. For a long time I’ve felt part of the GPX Racing family and driving GPX Historic McLaren M1 at Goodwood will be very special. I want to thank Fred Fatien, Pierre-Brice Mena and the entire GPX family for the opportunity.”
The Whitsun Trophy presented by Sky Cinema will kick off on Friday 16th September with official practice at 13:40 with the race scheduled for the next day at 16:40. If you feel like coming along note that there are only a few tickets left – for Friday only!
