A latecomer to motorsport, Steven Thomas has quickly made a name for himself among the Bronze drivers. In 2023, the American driver will still be racing in the category, this time with TDS Racing. The French team will run a second chassis in IMSA for the entire season.

What can you say about your season in IMSA ?

Being on pole a number of times and having the fastest average lap among the bronzes in most of the races was very satisfying. I got in a race car for the first time in January 2019,  so it has been a really quick trip to driving an LMP2 car in IMSA. My wife Emily and coach Ross Bentley really helped me to develop as a race car driver.  I work hard at it and it is so much fun. In 2022 we did not have the team success so I am looking forward to improving in 2023.

This season, you’re also in WEC. It’s a different approach for a Bronze driver ?

WEC has taught me a lot. The LMP2 car is different—different tires, different downforce, a little different power. So learning to adapt to the car and new tracks has been fun. As a bronze, you do not get to qualify like in IMSA, which is disappointing, but the bronze can make more of a difference because of the fewer safety cars and the full course yellow Code 60 that maintains the distance to other cars.

You did your first Le Mans this year. It was a great experience ?

Winning Le Mans in my first try was an amazing experience. The fans are very committed and really know racing. We have had a lot of team success in WEC, winning Monza as well, and are in the fight for the championship leading up to the final race.

Next year you will be with TDS Racing for a full IMSA programme. New challenge ?

TDS is recognized as one of the best LMP2 teams in the world, and l look forward to the challenge of competing at TDS’ level.

How did you hear about the team ?

Xavier reached out to me and convinced me that TDS gave me the best chance to win and to improve as a driver. It didn't take him long to convince me and the successful history of TDS Racing supports what he says.

The plan is to do WEC again in 2023 ?

No, WEC unfortunately is getting rid of pro am in LMP2 so I will not be back next year.
