Grégory de Sybourg-Siffert aims for a career in endurance racing
In the Siffert family, everyone knows Joseph, more commonly known as Jo. The Swiss driver, who tragically died in 1971 at Brands Hatch at the wheel of a Formula 1 car, left behind him a family passionate about motor sport and it is now the grandson, Grégory de Sybourg-Siffert, who is taking up the challenge in motorsport. His 2022 season include the Funyo championship before looking the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a near future, where his grandfather has seven participations. The 18 year old driver is aiming for a career in endurance racing. Why the Funyo championship ? "The serie is very formative for a reasonable price. Before joining the championship, we looked at what we could do in Formula 4 but the price of the season was too high. With the Funyo, we drive on beautiful circuits. My first test in the prototype was successful and we decided to race the whole season." Is this a unique season in the championship for you ? "Initially, the aim was to race for two seasons, but we're heading for just one. I don't know yet whether I'm going to do proto or GT. One of the tracks is to race in GT3 from 2023." Do you have a goal to reach ? "In three or four years time, I'm clearly aiming to take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a prototype or GT car. We still have to discuss all this and be careful not to end up in a sideline."
When you bear the name Siffert, Le Mans is a dream come true... "My grandfather never won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. His best result was 4th place in 1966 in a Porsche 906. The objective is to follow in his footsteps. When you're a kid, you dream of Formula 1 but it's still a dream, whereas Le Mans becomes a goal. You are followed by Benoit Morand. Is your collaboration recent ? "Benoit is a good friend of my family. I have known him for a long time as he raced with my uncle. He is the one who proposed me a test in F4 at Duqueine. Then he helped me by following me to the races to advise me. Do you already know the 24 Hours of Le Mans ? "I followed the event in 2014 with Benoit Morand and I immediately found it fantastic. In Imola, we were supporting the European Le Mans Series. There too, it was great to see the whole paddock. The aim is to make the dream come true. Is endurance racing something you enjoy ? "Yes, but we felt that starting out in a sprint car on my own was the best way for me to progress. I have so much to learn, which makes Funyo the ideal championship to gain experience driving alone." Are you already discussing for 2023 ? "Discussions are underway but nothing is finalised. I'm only 18, so I still have some time to go to Le Mans. Honestly, a prototype is a dream, but the current GT cars are also very beautiful."
