A new scenario for the Hyperpole!
For the first time since its introduction in 2020, the Le Mans 24 Hours Hyperpole will be able to take place in front of the fans. In September 2020, the event was held behind closed doors and last August, a sanitary gauge was still in place. This time, the fans will have a front row seat on the circuit. Another novelty is that the Hyperpole will be held during the day and not at nightfall due to the date. Some adjustments are to be expected on the Hyperpole. "The principle of the Hyperpole will remain identical to that of the last two years, but the scenario will evolve", declared Vincent Beaumesnil, the ACO's Sports Director, during the evening presentation of the event to the members of the ACO Club. How does the Hyperpole work ? At the end of the first qualifying session, the six cars with the best lap times in each category will qualify for the second qualifying session, called "Le Mans Hyperpole" or "Hyperpole". This means that 24 cars will be on track for a 30-minute session. The first six places on the grid are reserved for the Hyperpole-qualified cars - in order of fastest lap times achieved in that session. The following places are reserved for the non-Hyperpole qualified cars, in the order of the best lap times set in the first qualifying session. During the Hyperpole, it is forbidden to bring the cars participating in the session into their garage ; all other cars must be brought into their garage. It is also forbidden to refuel during the Hyperpole. What new scenario ? The details of the new scenario for the 2022 Hyperpole are not yet known. To spice things up a bit more, giving each competitor a start time could be the solution, similar to what we have at the 24 Hours of Spa during the Superpole. At Le Mans, we have 24 cars to run in a 30-minute session, so why not a start for one car every minute ? The answer will be given shortly...
